Tieta is
Zézé Motta's fourth collaboration with Carlos
Diegues since she starred in his ground-breaking Xica da
Silva in 1976. This time she plays the part of the cheerful
busybody spinster who works in Sant'Ana do Agreste's post office.
Her character has a crucial role in the weaving of the story's
various plots. Zézé defines her, saying: "Carmô
is a really strong, positive individual. She never married but
never suffered because of it. She never lost her optimism and
she is one hell of a gossip."
Zézé Motta
made her debut as an actress in the polemical play Roda Viva
in 1967. One of Brazil's most versatile and original actresses,
Zézé Motta has become a symbol in Brazil of
sensual black culture. Strong and uninhibited, she has starred
in over 20 films and launched in 1978 a successful singing career
which saw her represent Brazil in countries across the world.
At the request of Tieta's composer Caetano Veloso,
she accompanies him on one of the seven songs written for the
film.
