With 30 feature films to his credit since
his debut in 1976, Edgar Moura is one of Brazil's most
talented and experienced cinematographers. He had already worked
with Carlos Diegues several times. Concerning Tieta,
the director's ideas were very clear: "Carlos told me
that above all he wanted the film to be really Brazilian, to have
the colours of Bahia and to look really tropical, really alive.
He told me not to hold back and to capture an image of the colours
and feelings of a hot and tropical area."
Moura and
Diegues carefully planned the finest details of every single
shot, whether it be on the ground or on board a helicopter. With
his experience as a caricaturist, Moura drew up a storyboard
with other key members of the crew, for Diegues's approval.
He insists that the size of the project left no room for improvisation.
"Each shot was minutely designed and pre-set. When we started
filming we already had everything in our heads."
As for the lead actress, Edgar Moura
was bowled over. "My guidelines were only to film her as
a beautiful woman which is not difficult at all. Sonia Braga
is perfectly suited to the part, she is an extremely sensual and
experienced woman."
