Luciana was asked to create around 150 costumes
for 65 characters while Ocimar designed the wardrobe to be worn
by Sonia Braga as Tieta. Luciana ordered miles of cotton,
canvas, fustian, coarse cotton and longcloth from the Ferreira
Guimarães factory. Religious purple and black for Perpétua,
more vibrant colours for Carmô, sombre shades for Leonora
at the beginning moving to lighter shades and fabric as she finds
love in Sant'Ana do Agreste. One of the most enjoyable moments
for Luciana was creating 30 pairs of angels wings for the children's
choir which was to greet Tieta on her return to the village. Using
coconut leaves painted gold, she achieved quite a stunning effect.
Based in Paris, Oscar Versolato is
presently the only Brazilian fashion designer of international
standing, with a growing reputation worldwide. He created a unique
collection of 20 costumes exclusively for Sonia Braga as
Tieta. The result bears the distinctive Versolato trademark of
originality going hand in hand with a celebration of feminine
sensuality. Oscimar was delighted with his first commission for
the cinema: "Sonia Braga has an incredible awareness
about clothes which models don't have. She doesn't just wear them,
she interprets clothes. That's why my debut in cinema was so marvellous
because I had the good fortune to be able to dress an actress
like Sonia Braga."
Luciana Buarque
is convinced that sharing the job of costume design was the right
decision: "Tieta comes from a different universe and this
clash in the language of the costumes suggested by Carlos was
absolutely crucial. It was important for two people to do the
costumes to accentuate this difference and Ocimar Versolato's
work is just perfect."
